Malaysia Education System
try to recall back, from the very first day you step into the kindergarten until now, what does the word ’study’ meant to you?
for me, study = memorizing = exam
if we don’t memorize well, we won’t get good result. that is what Malaysian style of education: memorizing, attending exam, get the result, happy, then forget everything.. study is just for exam, that is why by the time when PMR, SPM and STPM are coming, you can see so many advertisements on talk that briefs students on how to answer the exam questions. some students even go for tuition, not because they can’t understand well, but to get the exam tips.
before entering university, i thought it will be different from the education style in school, but the reality is so disappointing. there is even a lecturer of mine telling us the ‘right’ way to answer the questions. she said ‘explain’ and ‘describe’ are two different things, and she actually photostat us a list of terms that are commonly used in the exam questions and their meaning.
for me, it doesn’t make any sense. as long as we can write out the answer, that’s it!! why need to make things so complicated? i don’t think when i graduate, i would give different answer for two patients, one of which asking me to explain the disease and the other one ask me to discuss about the disease.
besides, some lecturer are borned with the absence of a logic mind, i don’t know they treat their students as what; robot or photostat machine? we have to answer so many essay questions in just about two hours time. what happened to my juniors is even worse, 17 essay questions in two and a half hours. OMG!! only robot and photostat machine manage to do it OK.. they expect us to memorize their notes from the first word until the last word so that we can write out all the answer once we read the question without needing to think first.
sigh.. what to do. because we are all borne in Malaysia..
conclusion: in Malaysia, education is just a game for those who are good in memorizing facts, no matter they can apply the knowledge or not.
yaya…i totally and strongly agree with you…we are being trained to be a memorizing robot since young…tats why the quality of universities in our country are drop from year to year!…ya,what to do?just continue to memorise our notes for our next paper, am i right?haha
yup, the formula should be : study = memorizing = exam + ‘vomit out’ fast…hahah
