Insulin Injection
first of all, this is not a blog to counsel people on insulin injection, it’s just to share my experience..
during our clinical attachment with Dr Mohd, he told us that everyone of us are going to inject ourselves using insulin pen during our 4th year, and i actually don’t bother about it much, until the following week when we have a lecture on insulin injection technique…
that lecture is given by two personnel from a company selling insulin pen, not sure if they are pharmacists, but they are quite expert in insulin injection. during the day, they came in bringing two paper bag and start the lecture as usual. after they finished all the slide show, then reach the climax of the lecture: everyone of us are going to inject ourselves.
according to the two personnel, it is an order from our lecturer, not Dr Mohd, but Prof Fuad that teaches us Pharmacy Practice III. the reason is, if we don’t try it ourselves, how are we going to counsel the patients on insulin injection? quite logic..
i can still remember what Dr Mohd said during the clinical attachment session. in a sarcastic way he said: saya tak nak you orang hanya tahu cakap insulin injection tu tak sakit, sedangkan masa kamu mencuba, ada yang sampai menangis-nangis tak berani nak inject.”
so, each one of us was given an insulin pen and a needle to be attach on it. then it’s show time!! the class became as noisy as a market, because everybody including me was not expecting it, it came so suddenly..
believe me, when you have a needle in your hand, pointing towards your tummy, you would not have the gut to push it in. this happens in reality for those diabetic patients who recieve insulin injection for their very first time, and it’s our job to convice them to use it in order to make them comply to the medication. i think in the future, we need to actually inject ourselves in front of the patient, just to convince them that it is painless (it really does, you won’t even realize that the needle penetrate into your abdomen).
it is a good lesson and should be continued for the following batches. after the class, we got two insulin pens and a new needle as souvenir, good one..lol
